I always exchange holiday presents with my girlfriend, Shao Fen. Last year, while I was shopping for her, I saw an umbrella in her favourite colour. As soon as I saw it, I thought of her. I bought the umbrella and a scarf in the same colour. When Shao Fen opened the present, she looked really upset. She didn’t say anything, and she didn’t look at me. I felt hurt and confused by her reaction. Later she explained at in Chinese the word for umbrella sounds like the word for separation. When she saw the umbrella she misunderstood. She thought I wanted to end the relationship. After I heard that, I was very upset! I decided that next year, before I buy something, I’m going to check with sister!
